Financial Support for Red Seal Candidates
Apprenticeship Completion Grant (Red Seal) A grant of $2,000 that is given only once and is taxable. It is for registered apprentices who:

  • Successfully complete their apprenticeship training program, and
  • Get their journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade.

Apprentice Loan
  • Provides up to $4,000 per period of technical training in a designated Red Seal trade.
  • Can receive the loan for up to 5 periods of technical training.
  • Interest-free for up to 6 years as long as you are confirmed as being registered in the Red Seal Apprenticeship Program

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant
  • Designed for apprentices, registered in their province or territory, who have successfully completed their first and/or second year/level in a designated Red Seal trade.
  • Taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or level, for a lifetime maximum amount of $2,000 per person.

Canada Training Credit / Canada Training Credit Limit
Employment Insurance
  • You may be eligible to receive EI benefits while unemployed and attending your course.
  • You must provide proof of referral to receive EI benefits. Your province, territory, or training institution will issue you a 16-digit reference code as proof of referral when you are approved to attend full-time technical training.
  • *Note* Apprenticeship Grant payments are not considered earnings from employment, so they do not affect your EI benefits.
Tradesperson’s Tools deduction (also available for Mechanic Apprentices)
Tuition Tax Credit – Examination fees for licensing or certification
  • Examination fees paid to an educational institution, professional association, provincial ministry, or other similar institution, to take an occupational, trade or professional examination that is required to obtain a professional status recognized by federal or provincial statute, or to be licensed or certified as a tradesperson, to allow you to practice the profession or trade in Canada, may be eligible for the tuition tax credit.
  • You should be provided with a receipt to substantiate your eligible exam fees.
  • Ancillary fees or charges exceeding $250 and paid in respect of an occupational, trade, or professional examination are not eligible tuition fees unless they are required to be paid by all individuals taking the examination.
