Public Register

Public Register:

  • The Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) Public Register helps employers, contractors and homeowners verify whether an individual holds a necessary credential to legally practice one of the 23 compulsory trades* (i.e., electrician or plumber) in Ontario.
  • When you become an apprentice in a compulsory trade your name will automatically appear on the register.
  • Apprentices and tradespersons in voluntary** trades are not listed on the register.

    • To appear on the register, individuals practicing compulsory trades must hold:
      • a valid Registered Training Agreement that is not suspended if they are an apprentice OR
      • a Provisional C of Q OR
      • a C of Q
    • Electricians and plumbers, as well as journeypersons in other compulsory trades, need to renew their C of Q annually for $60 + HST.

 

*Compulsory Trade:  To legally work in a compulsory trade, you must hold a Certificate of Qualification or Provisional Certificate of Qualification issued by STO or be registered as an apprentice with the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and hold a Registered Training Agreement. You must also be listed on the STO Public Register.

** Voluntary/Non-compulsory Trade: Certification and listing on the STO Public Register are not legally required to practice the trade. Some voluntary trades do have C of Q exams. Visit the STO website for more information.
