Step 1: Recruit
- Contact Support Ontario Youth to help you with all your hiring needs.
- Contact local secondary schools for interested co-op education students or Ontario Youth Apprenticeship (OYAP) students or contact colleges for pre-apprentice program graduates.
- Seek out local distributors, job agencies and newspapers.
- Network with other electrical contractors, they may have had an applicant they may have not been able to hire.
- Search websites such as www.ontario.ca/employmentontario or https://careerfoundation.com/made-in-the-trades
Step 2: Selection Prerequisites
- Eligible apprenticeship candidates in Ontario must be at least 16 years old and have successfully completed the prescribed academic standard for the trade or skill set.
- For all practical purposes, Ontario Secondary School Diploma is highly recommended.
Step 3: Understand Your Responsibilities
Employers must:
- Have access to facilities, human resources and equipment needed for training.
- Allow an apprentice to attend classes with the chosen learning provider.
- Define the apprentice’s job scope and responsibilities.
- Explain safety training procedures.
- Complete hiring and orientation of employees.
